The Lock-In
Video Installation
Barbican Public Spaces, July 2022
Stanley Schtinter’s Lock-In never ends. Consisting entirely of footage stitched together from the Queen Vic pub in British soap opera EastEnders, it is an endless lock-in: inasmuch as its source is endless and its makers living. The viewer never leaves the Queen Vic pub.
In June 2022, The Lock-In toured the real pubs of London's East End. Each venue screened a different year in a day (from the programme’s launch in 1985 until 1995), with an average screening duration of ten hours. Attendance was free for drinkers. In July 2022, The Lock-In took residency in the Barbican’s public spaces, presenting visitors with a Brutalist perma-pub. Co-curated with Stanley Schtinter.
